After a two-day tournament, men’s golf finished fourth out of 10 teams in the CACC Championships at the White Beeches Golf and Country Club to tie a school record. Captain Shawn Mayer ’20 led the Griffins with 79 (+7) to secure a fifth-place title and a spot on the All-Tournament Team. The tournament was hosted by Dominican College in Haworth, N.J. The fourth place finish will help boost Chestnut Hill College in the regional rankings.
Day One of the Championships left the Scarlet and Gold in fifth place behind Wilmington University, who took home first place, and Goldey-Beacom College, who finished second. While the Griffin’s were not far behind they looked to make up ground going into the second round of competition.
“Going into the final round being two back of the lead, I kept my game plan the same as day one. Just go out and play my game, taking it one shot at a time and not trying to force anything,” says Mayer. “Looking back, if I could change it or do it differently, I wouldn’t. Some days you have it, some days you don’t.”
Mayer was followed in the standings by freshman David Schmidling, Co-Captain Taylor Mezzatesta ’20, sophomore Ryan Woelfling, and freshman Drew Maiorca with 18th place, 24th place, 32nd place, and 38th place respectively.
“We have a young team this year, minus Shawn and I, but the moral of the team is very high. We’re all rooting for each other,” adds Mezzatesta. “We all struck the ball pretty well but we need to spend more time on the putting green. I think if we all made some more putts we would have been second or third.”
The Griffins will continue their season on Oct. 11 at The College of Saint Rose Shootout. The final tournament of the season will be played at Sunnybrook Golf Club at the Griffin Invitational. This tournament hosted by the Chestnut Hill Men’s Golf Team will also serve as the team’s Pack the Place, a program that invites Chestnut Hill Students to support their fellow student athletes.
