On September 16, 2019, first-year students joined the current Student Government Association board to hear campaigns from the new candidates to represent the Class of 2023.
This years’ candidates were the largest group to run for student government positions in the past four years. Three students ran for each position available for election, Freshman Class President and Freshman Class Vice-President.
Voting was open to the Class of 2023 from September 17 to September 20. After the polls had closed, the officers were named as Najeer Francis and Symphony Carter as President and Vice-President respectively.
The officers were selected based off of their campaigns. Francis, the new class president, wanted this position because he wanted to be more involved with the community, and also to make the freshman class more comfortable in their new home. He describes himself as a giver, and wants to use that trait to make this year the best it can be for the class of 2023.
“I want everybody to be more social,” says Francis. “I know it is hard because everyone is different, but I want to do more activities to get everyone involved.”
Carter, who will be working closely with Francis, says that she wants the freshman class to be a more giving and loving community. “I want to make everyone on campus to feel comfortable enough to speak to each other and always have a friend,” she says. “I am always here to listen and to take ideas to accomplish my goal.”
These two freshmen are excited to be leading their class this year as role models and mentors for their peers.
